The Latino Policy Forum Partners with Prominent Local Organizations and Univision Chicago to Host Illinois Attorney General Candidate Forum

By Roberto Valdez, Communications Associate, Latino Policy Forum

Over 100 people gathered in Avondale recently to hear from seven of the eight Democratic candidates running for Illinois Attorney General.

The candidates – State Rep. Scott Drury; Sharon Fairley; Aaron Goldstein; State Sen. Kwame Raoul; Nancy Rotering; Jesse Ruiz and former Governor Pat Quinn – addressed issues important to Latinos in Illinois. Candidates from both parties were invited.

They also answered questions from the crowd, which included students from the ASPIRA Business and Finance High School, as well as the audience of over 15,000 viewers watching on Univision's Facebook livestream. Univision Anchor Enrique Rodriguez was the moderator for the event. You can re-watch the AG Forum in its entirety here.

While the candidates responded to questions involving minority representation in government and protecting vulnerable Latino immigrants, all promised to be a champion against corruption and to fight unjust policies handed down by the Trump Administration.

Kwame Raoul said of Trump's recent idea to introduce firearms into school settings that “arming our teachers is a dumb idea. Our teachers are role models. (...) We have to invest in communities and in people who have suffered from trauma."

The Forum would like to thank everyone who attended including the candidates and our partners: the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois, the Hispanic National Bar Association, ASPIRA Inc. of Illinois, and Univision Chicago. Special thanks to the Reva & David Logan Foundation for supporting the Forum's Impacto Illinois initiative and helping make this event possible.
