Background
Latino Policy Forum (formerly Latinos United) and Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy (CAAIP) formed a two-year partnership to organize events that increase understanding and foster alliances between African Americans and Latinos.
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Freedom Rides and the Division Street Riots, CAAIP and Latinos United organized an event hosted at Columbia College in 2006 that was well attended, drawing over 200 people, primarily youth.
At present, given the anti-immigrant sentiment nationwide the two organizations wish to plan an African American and Latino immigration symposium to foster a dialogue between the two communities on this sensitive issue and to help strengthen existing relationships and alliances.
Program
The half-day program will include presentations from Latino and African American leaders about how immigration affects their communities.
There will be national and local panelists. The national panel speakers will discuss how these two communities have come together to form alliances in cities across the nation. The local panel will discuss the challenges posed by this issue for our local communities and highlight existing local alliances and activities to encourage participants to become involved in these projects or start something new.
Small groups will identify issues of common concern and discuss strategies to build alliances between these two communities.
