More than 75,000 homeowners filed for foreclosure in Cook County in 2010, and rates are up more than 18 percent over 2009 levels in the suburban areas of the county, according to the Woodstock Institute. And while foreclosure is devastating communities across the state, minority community are particularly hard hit: Non Whites are five times more likely to hold their homes as an asset over corporate stock. While housing has long provided a pathway to the American Dream in minority communities, the ongoing foreclosure crisis is keeping that dream out of reach for many local families.
